How Tirzepatide Works

This drug blends two revolutionary drugs to offer assistance for those who need a boost as they strive to lose weight. And we’ll guide your program to help you receive the results you’re after.

01.

The Consultation

The Consultation

The first step of the process is your consultation. This is when we gain a deeper understanding of you, your health, and the challenges you’ve faced with weight loss in the past. We’ll ask you questions regarding what you’ve tried in the past and assess your medical history. This is an excellent time to ask any questions you have regarding the drug.

We’ll evaluate your health, including checking your blood pressure. Additionally, we’ll take your weight and height to determine your BMI, which compares your weight to your height.

If this is an effective option to help you lose weight, the next step is for our physician to order blood work to evaluate your blood sugar and cholesterol levels, as well as to assess your kidney and liver function.

02.

Receiving the Treatment

Receiving the Treatment

Once we decide this medication is safe and suitable for you, you’ll start receiving your injections. Typically, they’re given once weekly in the abdomen or thigh via a subcutaneous injection, meaning it’s administered under the skin.

For your convenience, self-administration is possible, and we’ll educate you on how to administer it properly, including the sites you can use and other useful information. The syringes are prefilled to the dose you should have at that time, so you don’t have to worry about getting the dosage right.

We start you out on the lowest dosage so your body has time to adjust to the medication and will gradually increase it until you reach the ideal amount for you.

03.

Follow-Up Appointments

Follow-Up Appointments

After you start taking tirzepatide, you’ll need to come in for follow-up appointments where we’ll monitor your progress and continuously conduct bloodwork. We’ll alter your dosage as necessary.

Tirzepatide’s Mechanisms of Action

This medication has a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist that mimics the natural hormone produced by your body. Besides regulating your blood sugar levels, the GLP-1 in this drug prevents the liver from releasing stored glucose when blood sugar levels are high.

The GLP-1 also slows digestion, so your stomach doesn’t signal your brain that you’re hungry as soon. You then wind up feeling full for longer, which helps with appetite control and reduces how much you’re eating. It even affects the areas of the brain that control satiety and hunger to help you feel full for longer and eat less. This effect also reduces cravings.

Besides this active ingredient, this medication contains gastric inhibitory peptide (GIP), another hormone the body naturally produces. It regulates both insulin secretion and fat metabolism, as well as other effects. It stimulates the pancreas to release insulin to lower your blood sugar levels and even increases insulin’s response.

Like GLP-1, this hormone also slows the rate at which your stomach empties, keeping you feeling fuller for longer. However, unlike GLP-1, it also affects how your body stores and burns fat.

Qualifying for Tirzepatide

While having excess weight is a problem that many people feel they have, that doesn’t automatically qualify a person for a medicated approach to weight loss. We advise people to consider these factors as they consider booking a consultation:

Have a BMI of 30 or More

We’ll recommend this medication if you have a BMI of 30 or higher, even if you don’t have any health concerns related to your weight. Your BMI is a figure that compares your weight to your height. Don’t know your BMI? An online calculator can provide an initial estimate, and we’ll assess it further during your consultation.

Have a BMI of 27 or Higher with Weight-Related Health Problems

Some people qualify for treatment with a BMI of 27 or higher, as long as they have health issues related to their weight. If you haven’t been previously diagnosed with high blood pressure or cholesterol, we’ll check at your appointment.

Have Tried Losing Weight in the Past

We’ll ask you about your past attempts at weight loss and how you responded to diet and exercise alone. Avoiding a medicated approach is preferable when possible. That said, if you’ve tried diet and exercise or even other medications without success, tirzepatide may be right for you.

Struggle with Portion Control

Overeating is a concern for many clients who come through our doors. They may not try to, but they consume more in one meal or throughout the day than they need. Taking a medication that controls your appetite can help you consume fewer calories and decrease your caloric intake.

Every client responds differently to treatment. However, on average, clients on a 5 mg dose will lose 15 percent of their starting body weight by 72 weeks. Those on a 10 mg lose an average of 19.5 percent of their initial body weight in that time, while someone on a 15 mg will lose an average of 20.9 percent of their original body weight in that span.

You won’t start losing weight after your first week of treatment, but you’ll notice a decrease in your appetite. By three to four weeks, you’ll start to see weight loss, often about four percent of your beginning weight.

During the first three to six months, you’ll see the most significant results, and most people continue to lose some weight after, but not as much or as quickly.

Hydrology, serving Coral Gables and the neighboring Miami communities, is here for you with medication and support for weight loss. Through a comprehensive evaluation, education, and continuous monitoring, we’ll be here for you every phase of the process.
